The Police Ombudsman is to investigate the action taken by the PSNI following an arson attack at a GAA clubhouse in Co Londonderry.

Sean Dolan's Club in the Creggan estate was extensively damaged during the blaze on 28 December.

Police originally said it was started accidentally but the next day they said the fire was sparked deliberately, after security footage was released showing people starting the blaze.

At the time of the incident, the police were criticised for missing vital evidence on the CCTV film.

On Wednesday, a police spokesperson said: "District Commander Chief Superintendent Stephen Martin has now referred the matter to the office of the Police Ombudsman who will carry out an independent examination of police actions".

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the announcement.

"I would encourage anyone with any information or concerns about events before or after the fire - including the original investigation - to come forward and cooperate with the Ombudsman's investigation," he said.

"It is imperative that all of the facts about this fire are uncovered in order that we can demonstrate to the community that we not only have accountable policing but competent policing also."

yet more giving in to republician demands waste of money and time trust sinn fein/ira to worry about such trivial matters when people are living in poverty and would rather see money invested in more worthwile causes.

If the news reports are correct about the `falling out amongst republicans` that occurred earlier on the night in question, I am sure there will be a line of willing witnesses from this `staunchest of police supporting areas` queuing up to provide statements to the PSNI to enable them to take their investigation forward. Emmm, lets see how that goes!

If the Fire Service have admitted that they gave the wrong information to Police in regards to the nature of this fire (i.e. they said it was accidental) why is the going to be an Ombudsman investigation? Will this be another witch hunt on the Police for someone to 'blame' on this matter? It will be interesting to see the results.

What a stupid waste of time and money to have the Ombudsman's office investigating the police mistake in assuming this fire was not arson. What dose the GAA want. Heads to roll in the police force their mistake was corrected. Our police force is like others human beings make mistakes
