Three police officers have been injured in a pursuit and subsequent crash with a suspected stolen Audi A3 car, following an attempted armed robbery of a shop in south Belfast.

The silver Audi, with three men inside, was reported to have been involved in the robbery bid at Lockview Road at about 8pm on Sunday.

It is understood that staff foiled the attempt by locking the doors of the shop, forcing two men - one reported to have been armed with a gun - to return to the car where the driver was still waiting.

They made off and, at about 3am on Monday, a police pursuit was sparked in the west of the city during which two patrol cars were damaged and the three officers were injured.

They required medical treatment, but their conditions are not life-threatening.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in the Ardmoulin Street area on suspicion of attempted armed robbery, carrying a firearm with intent, and attempted grievous bodily harm with intent.

He remains in custody helping police with their enquiries.

Officers are appealing for anyone who saw the Audi A3 in the Lockview Road area around the time of the attempted robbery, or in the Ardmoulin Street before the police pursuit, to contact them.

As is normal procedure, the Police Ombudsman's Office has been informed.
