The discovery sparked a security alert in the Rossglass Road area of the Co Down village.

Police and army bomb squad officers were called to the scene after the alarm was raised following the discovery by the workers, and a number of local homes were evacuated.

Tests were carried out on the device and it was later declared viable. Police said they believe it may have been in place for several years. It has now been removed for further examinations.

The alert has ended and families have been allowed to return home.

It comes after a separate security alert at Thiepval Army Barracks in Lisburn, Co Antrim, ended earlier on Thursday with "nothing untoward" being found.

Police and army bomb experts attended the scene after a suspicious object was discovered inside the perimeter fence of the army site.

The Magheralave Road has reopened after it was closed for several hours and residents have been allowed to return to homes that were evacuated.

pete in lisburn , you tell me how the police can be everywhere to stop some terrorist from planting or dumping a device?check out how many police cover where you live for an example?you would be in for a shock just how low the numbers are, due to cut backs etc we have less police now on duty than we ever had,now they have to deal with the parades and public disorder, you get on the phone and tell the new chief constable how to deal with it?you are a typical know all who knows nothing about policing.
