A housing association has apologised after residents in a nursing home were left without heat for more than 24 hours.

Oil ran out at the Marriott House in Magherafelt and relatives of residents said carers were using kettles to get hot water to wash the elderly occupants.

Supplies weren't replenished for over a day, forcing residents to endure the cold and use blankets and hot drinks for heat.

Clanmill Housing said oil ran out because of a fault with the device that alerts the supplier when levels are low.

Director of Housing Colette Moore has insisted efforts were made to make residents more comfortable.

"There were electrical heaters provided and there were additional blankets provided and we are ensuring that there will be enough additional electrical heaters in terms of our review of the services for the future to make sure that doesn't happen again," she said.

"It's certainly something we regret and we apologise for to our residents in Marriott."
