A man entered their home next to St John's Catholic Church on the Falls Road and attacked one of the nuns at around 4.20pm on Tuesday.
He demanded she empty her purse before attacking her and another nun, who was there at the time, and then searched the property for more cash.
The robber forced the two women into the rear room of the building before escaping.
One nun was treated at the scene for minor injuries while the second required hospital treatment for shock.
SDLP Councillor for Lower Falls Colin Keenan condemned the attack and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
"It is appalling, that two very elderly and vulnerable women in our community have had their home violated in this way. I find it despicable that anyone would prey on our elderly citizens in this way," he said.
"I condemn this assault and call for the full riggers of the law to be brought to bear on the individual responsible for this vicious crime."
The attacker is described as in his 40s, around 6ft tall and of stocky build.
He was wearing a dark jacket, jeans and trainers and spoke with a local accent.
Detectives have asked anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact them.
