The body of Eamonn Ferguson, 35 and from the north Belfast area, was found just before 3am at a flat at Ardoyne Place in the city.

PSNI Serious Crime Branch detectives have detained two men as part of the murder inquiry.

"Police have opened an incident room at Musgrave police station," a PSNI spokesman said.

They have appealed for anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the area on Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday morning to contact them.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course," the spokesman added.

North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín said the death is "deeply shocking."

Ms Ní Chuilín, who is the Stormont Culture Minister, said: "Ardoyne is a tight-knit community and news of this death has come as a shock to everyone. I would appeal to anyone with any information to bring it forward as soon as possible."

Alban Maginness, SDLP MLA for North Belfast, said: "My first thoughts are with the family and relations of the deceased. This is terrible news for a family to receive, made worse by the tragic circumstances.

"On behalf of the community I extend sympathy to the family following this sad and frightening incident.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have heard anything to get in touch with the police."
