Mr Nicholson is one of the longest serving members of the European Parliament having been first elected in 1989.

Speaking as he handed in his nomination papers, he said he would campaign for European reform.

He said: "I am a Euro realist and believe in maximising the benefits Northern Ireland can get in Europe while fully supporting measures to reform the top heavy and bureaucratic institutions of the EU which are out of touch with the views of ordinary people in the UK."

Mr Nicholson said the people of Northern Ireland should be allowed to have their say on the future of the EU.

He added: "It is 38 years since the referendum was held for the UK to join the Common Market.

"Then there were six countries involved and all were at similar states of development. Now we have 28 countries with diverse economies and cultures.

"The EU cannot survive and prosper in its current form."

The election will take place on 22 May.

It's not a very good deal is it? - we get 3 European MP jobs and the Europeans are coming here for jobs in their thousands. Let them keep their parliament jobs and give us back our local jobs.
