Nicholson to run for UUP in Europe

The UUP has confirmed its current MEP Jim Nicholson will seek re-election in the upcoming European polls.

Mr Nicholson is one of the longest serving members of the European Parliament having been first elected in 1989.Speaking as he handed in his nomination papers, he said he would campaign for European reform.He said: "I am a Euro realist and believe in maximising the benefits Northern Ireland can get in Europe while fully supporting measures to reform the top heavy and bureaucratic institutions of the EU which are out of touch with the views of ordinary people in the UK."Mr Nicholson said the people of Northern Ireland should be allowed to have their say on the future of the EU.He added: "It is 38 years since the referendum was held for the UK to join the Common Market."Then there were six countries involved and all were at similar states of development.
