A 75-year-old Newry pensioner recovers after brutal attack
A 75-year-old Newry pensioner is recovering after being brutally attacked by masked robbers in his home.

Jim Campbell was woken from his sleep by loud banging on his door, which he thought came from a neighbour in distress.

As he opened his door last Thursday night he was hit in the face and head with a hammer.

It is understood two masked men carried out the savage attack in which Mr Campbell was tied up and repeatedly beaten, sustaining serious injuries.

Those responsible also threatened to kill him if he did not hand over the keys to his gun cabinet.

A number of firearms were stolen while Mr Campbell was left bruised and bleeding.

"He is scarred mentally for the rest of his life, as are his family and friends and neighbours", Mr Campbell's son Billy told UTV.

"It's a quiet area here in The Meadow and nobody ever thought, this sort of attack ... You never think it's going to happen to you."

Mr Campbell is recovering with his family and hopes to return to his home soon.

Police have re-issued their appeal for information following the attack.
