Queues for passengers travelling through security at George Best Belfast City Airport this Christmas will be cut by half because of new equipment.

Extra search channels being introduced on Monday will also ease the way for festive travellers with four new archways, increased staffing and the latest screening technology to reduce false alarms for harmless items, a spokesman for the airport authority said.

A fast track lane for business class travellers will open next month.

It is the latest phase in a £6m terminal project which last month saw the opening of a new departures lounge, creating 20 jobs.

Stephen Moreland, head of security at the airport, said queues would be slashed.

"We're constantly making improvements to improve the passenger experience," he said.

"No one likes queuing so we have invested heavily in additional archways and screening equipment which will speed passengers journey times through security by 50%."
