Mr McNarry was removed from the Assembly group on Friday, following remarks he made in an interview.

In the Belfast Telegraph article, Mr McNarry voiced support for greater cooperation between unionist parties and revealed that he had taken part in "secret talks" with the DUP.

UUP leader Tom Elliott said Mr McNarry had gone "beyond his remit" and removed him from the Education Committee on Friday.

Mr McNarry then issued a statement which said he was quitting the Assembly group.

UUP leader Tom Elliott said he did not regret disciplining the senior member, but Mr McNarry told UTV he felt "badly damaged and betrayed" by the leader's actions.

Mr Nesbitt revealed his appointment to the committee on Tuesday.

"While I would have preferred this appointment to have come about under different circumstances, I am delighted to have the opportunity to join the Education Committee and try to ensure the Executive retains a focus on what matters in education, the pupils," he said.

Congratulations Mike it's good to witness someone such as your goodself achieving a position of authority within the education committee. It's sensible and unbigoted people like you who received their education at Cambridge University that are required in authorative positions in the Northern Ireland Assembly rather than those who were educated at the taxpayers expense in a Long Kesh prison cell whilst serving out a sentence for terrorist activity, or a chef who finds difficulty in speaking proper english or indeed a trumped up estate agents clerk.
