The Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has approved an increase in Trevor Haslett's pay, after he indicated that he wanted to step down.

The DRD Minister told UTV that a deal had been agreed which would see the interim Chief Executive receive a £20,000 pay rise, subject to Northern Ireland Water's performance over the winter months.

"NI Water needs leadership and stability," Mr Kennedy said.

"Trevor Haslett has demonstrated that he is the best person to lead the company through the winter months."

"The package proposed by the board of NI Water has been approved but will not be paid until after the winter period."

Mr Haslett took over in January after his predecessor Lawrence MacKenzie stood down in the wake of the winter burst pipes crisis.

It is understood he was not being offered as much money as the previous boss, who was paid close to £200,000 a year.

It is believed an enhanced pay offer was made to Mr Haslett at the beginning of November, which required the backing of the Departments of Regional Development and Finance.

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone has criticised the move given the current economic climate.

"Many people especially the vulnerable in our society are supposed to be tightening their belts and preparing themselves for changes in their benefits."

"Yet willy-nilly it appears a £20,000 pay increase is being handed out to someone who threatens to resign," he said.

Fantastic! I haven’t had a pay rise since 2008, and you wonder why people are fed up and on strike next week. Think I will threaten to quit and see what offers I’m made!

Absolutely unbelievable - are the ministers so far removed from reality that they don't realise how this will be received by the public, the voters, the tax payers? Thousands of people are struggling to afford the basics of food and heat : given the current economic conditions this is beyond acceptable!

Yeah, Mike, it never changes. They can keep a straight face and tell you that you should be able to live on 50 quid a week and this guy 'needs' another 400 quid a week to stop him chucking his dummy out of the pram. I worked as a sub-contractor for the Water Service a few years ago for the princely take home pay for a 40 hour week of 780 quid... thats less than half of this guy's rise.

I sent NIW this email I think it is an absolute disgrace that a government owned company can have its CEO demand a pay increase or resign. Tax payer money going to waste. Please pass this message along to your CEO and his prime time spotlight in the news right after a story on how Hospitals will be downgraded due to insufficient funding yet the tax payers must fund this guys pay increase. You already earn more than 80% of people in this country and yet you demand more. Why is this so? I doubt Trevor Haslett will ever see this email or even reply but if he thinks he is worth the pay rise, take 5 minutes and tell us why you should deserve to waste money like this?
