A spokesperson said the £1m scheme includes homes with gas fired heating installations, open fires and homes with oil fired boilers which are situated indoors.
It comes after an initial run of 3,500 homes with solid fuel room heaters were fitted out.
Over the past 10 years, there have been 62 deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning in NI. The NIHE said it wants to ensure all its homes are safe.
A statement said: "We have robust servicing programmes for all our heating systems, carried out by competent and qualified contractors.
"Carbon monoxide detectors will complement our servicing programmes and will provide an early warning of any potential problems."
Any fuel-burning heating appliance which is not functioning properly can produce lethal carbon monoxide fumes.
