The man, understood to be in his late 50s, was taking photographs close to the lighthouse with another man on Sunday afternoon when he fell into the sea.
Two lifeboats were launched by Lough Swilly RNLI for the rescue. The Irish Coastguard helicopter from Sligo also attended the scene and airlifted the man to Letterkenny General Hospital.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Joe Joyce, RNLI's spokesperson for Lough Swilly and Buncranna explained: "At about 2.40pm we got a request for assistance from the Marine Rescue Centre in Malin Head.
"Apparently there were two people down at Fanad Lighthouse taking photographs, and unfortunately one of them had an accident and fell in."
