Northern Ireland has been basking in summer sunshine, with people making the most of the fine weather right at the start of the school holidays - but a break could be just over the horizon.

While pupils will be delighted to have caught a glimpse of blue skies since escaping the classroom, unfortunately there could be a return to more overcast weather by the end of the week.

According to the Met Office, Tuesday could be the last of the bright sunshine at least for the time being.

Wednesday and Thursday are predicted to bring clouds and, by Friday, the rain could be back.

Heavy downpours are forecast, with showers continuing over the weekend and into next week.

Whether the good weather will return remains to be seen, with forecasts less accurate beyond a five-day period.

But no doubt, many people will be keeping their fingers crossed.
