Rory McIlroy and the coveted Claret Jug have been welcomed back home to Northern Ireland, following his success at the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

The Holywood star touched down in Belfast on Monday afternoon, while his local golf club cleared a space in its trophy cabinet.

Fans of the 25-year-old cheered him on over the weekend as he became the first European to win three different majors since The Masters was founded in 1934.

McIlroy is also only the third person ever to achieve the feat by 25, after US legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

His cousin Fergus McIlroy told UTV he's hugely proud of Rory.

"I'm just so happy for him because he's proved everyone who said he couldn't do it wrong," he said.

"He's still one of the best golfers in the world."

McIlroy is, in fact, now the world's number two - just behind Australian Adam Scott and ahead of Sweden's Henrik Stenson.

His latest victory has been hailed by everyone from First and deputy First Ministers Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness, to Prime Minister David Cameron, and former US president Bill Clinton.

They are NOT ALLOWED to sign autographs until they hand in their score card. Those saying he should have signed it don't know what they are taking about.

People People People. Please google this and you will see: " He tweeted 'Just to clear up the signature thing. We are asked not to sign autographs until we have officially handed in our scorecards. #RulesAreRules.' " Ok? Issue solved!

Would some of the clowns on here criticise Ronaldo for not signing an autograph as he was about to take a penalty ? It's the same thing for Rory, he is still in play ,it's the rules !!! p.s The "wee boy" was a big strapping lad who climbed a fence and bundled his way through people to get to Rory !!!
