The heatwave hit its peak on Friday, but the Met Office is predicting there is still plenty of sun in store for Northern Ireland this summer.

Temperatures climbed to a blistering 28C in Castlederg, Co Tyrone at 1pm.

The whole region has been basking in sunshine with highs of 27C recorded in several areas, including Portrush and along the North Coast.

Belfast, Downpatrick, Newry and Enniskillen have all been in the mid-20s.

The run of hot weather between Tuesday and Friday looks set to make this the warmest week of the year so far, but the outlook for the weekend isn't quite so good

John Wylie from the Met Office said there could be some showers on Saturday as NI returns to a period of more variable weather, however the temperatures are expected to climb once again next month.

He explained: "Friday is another scorcher - it's already 28C at lunchtime in Castlederg, which is the new maximum, and I can't see it getting this hot again in August.

"This month, while hot, is less hot than July 2013 when we had two weeks of warm weather. There's plenty of summer sun left, but for the time being we will settle in to more variable weather."

The Met Office forecast for Saturday predicts a cloudier day with a band of showers moving across from the west turning heavy at times before dying out in the evening.

Sunday and Monday are to be mainly dry and bright, while Tuesday is to be warmer again.
