Police were called to a house in the Castleview Court area of the town on Sunday morning following reports that 36-year-old Mairead McCallion had suffered head injuries.

She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but died on Monday.

Ms McCallion did not reside in the house in which she was attacked.

A murder investigation has now been launched by the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch and a special incident room has been set up at Omagh Police Station.

Dectectives are following a number of positive lines of enquiry.

The PSNI said: "Anyone who can assist with any information about this incident is asked to contact the Incident Room on 0845 600 8000."

Paying tribute, Dr Josephine Deehan, an SDLP councillor for Omagh, said: "Well, I've known Mairead for a long number of years. I found her to be an exceptionally warm and gentle person.

"She was of very high intellect, she was well known within our community and she will be very, very much missed."
