PSNI are appealing for information linked to 36-year-old Mark Gourley, who was reported missing on 7 March 2009.
"As a result of new evidence, Police have launched a murder investigation," a spokesperson said.
Mark was last seen in the Glengormley area wearing a black waterproof jacket with a grey design on the shoulders, black Umbro tracksuit bottoms and black leather trainers.
Mark is described as 5ft 9ins tall and of medium build, with fair cropped hair. His right eyebrow is pierced and he has tattoos on his left shoulder and left forearm and a tattoo of his first name on his right arm.
At the time of his disappearance, the PSNI said Mark, who was from the Castlemara area of Carrickfergus, was a vulnerable person.
A senior detective is due to outline further details of the murder investigation on Tuesday morning.
