The woman was threatened by two men as they pushed past her before kicking down a bathroom door and shooting her partner, aged in his 20s, in both legs.

He was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital for treatment to injuries which aren't life threatening.

Police are continuing to investigate the attack, which took place at a property on Kerrigan Close in the Brandywell area of the city, at around 10pm on Monday.

Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue, who lives just yards away, condemned those responsible.

"Two men with their faces covered burst into this house and burst past the young lady of the house, threatening to shoot her if she didn't move out of the way," she explained.

"They went on to kick in the bathroom door and shoot the young man in both legs. The young lady has a two-year-old child. Thankfully she was up in bed sleeping, but the young lady herself and indeed the young man were very, very traumatised."

Anyone with information has been asked to come forward to the PSNI.
