Two armed men pulled a terrified motorist from his car and hijacked the vehicle on Friday night.
The 68-year-old driver was on Whiterock Road in Belfast when he was threatened with a gun and dragged from his blue coloured Peugeot.
The PSNI said the driver was unhurt but badly shaken from his ordeal.
His car was discovered a short time later in the Gortnamonagh Rise area.
Detectives have appealed anyone who witnessed the hijack, which happened shortly before 8.30pm, to make contact.
