Millie Martin died on Friday evening at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, following an attack at a house in Glebe Park in the Co Fermanagh town.

After an application to Omagh court on Saturday, officers from the PSNI's serious crime unit had already been handed an extra 36 hours to question the 30-year-old man about the murder of the baby girl.

'Angel'

Over the weekend, Millie's grieving family expressed their heartbreak following the death of their "little angel".

"The entire close-knit family are numb with pain - we simply can't believe that our loving, darling little angel is gone," they said.

"Millie was our beautiful and precious little girl and we feel blessed to have been able to share that short life. She lit up our lives and brought us endless joy."

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher has called on social services to do more to protect vulnerable children.

"We've come to a terrible stage now where our young and vulnerable children are not safe in their own homes," he said.

"While I understand in this case due process has to be followed I do believe our support services, particularly the social services need to be looking at the gaps in their own provision. I believe there is more they can do."

Sinn Fein MP for the area Michelle Gildernew sent her deepest condolences to the family of Millie Martin.

"As a mother I can only imagine the type of suffering the family will be going through at this tragic time", she said.

"When I heard of nature of Millie's death I was physically shaking.

"Obviously questions need to be asked of many agencies in relation to what happened to allow Millie to endure such a horrific death."

Investigators have refused to disclose the results of post-mortem tests on her body.

The child was first admitted to the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen on Thursday night before being transferred to Belfast. She died in intensive care at the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Western Health Trust staff are assisting police.

Glebe Park is a residential area of the Co Fermanagh lakeside town on the road to Tempo.
