It happened in the Crumlin Road area of Belfast at around 11am on Friday 11 May.
The woman let the two men into her house but they could not find the ball and left.
She later noticed her handbag was missing.
Police said the handbag was recovered in the Sunningdale area the next day, and while the woman was not injured she was left badly shaken.
They have urged homeowners to be vigilant when it comes to unexpected callers.
A statement said: "It is worth remembering that bogus callers will use all sorts of tactics to gain access to a victim's home.
"Genuine callers will not mind being challenged about the authenticity of their identity.
"If you have elderly relatives, neighbours, or provide care for anyone who may fall prey to this type of crime, make them aware of these messages. Police would also advise householders to refrain from keeping large sums of money in the house."
Anyone with further information on the robbery has been asked to come forward.
