Mr Smyth, 32, was assaulted in a laneway beside a river at Ballinahone Avenue in June 2010, but he failed to recover from the attack and died in hospital in June of this year.

Two men were arrested on Monday in connection with his murder.

Michael Wilson, who is 22 and from the Thornleigh area of Armagh, and Gareth McKinney, who is also 22 and from Cabragh Road in the city, appeared at Newry Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

A detective told the court he could connect the two accused to the charges.

He said the assault on Mr Smyth had been a chance encounter during which a disagreement or altercation had taken place.

The detective added that there were four people present during the assault, the two defendants, the victim and the key witness.

During the proceedings, the defendants spoke only to confirm their names and date of births.

No bail application was made for Michael Wilson.

A bail application was made for Gareth McKinney but was refused.

The pair were remanded in custody to appear via video link at Armagh court next month.
