The Holywood man held off a determined challenge from Sergio Garcia to lift the Claret Jug on Sunday at Royal Liverpool and to claim his third major title.

His victory has taken him from eighth to second in the latest world rankings, behind Australian Adam Scott.

The Co Down sports star met with Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness at Stormont Castle on Tuesday.

Mr Robinson described Rory McIlroy as a "tremendous ambassador for Northern Ireland."

He said that three years ago the 25-year-old had visited with his first Major trophy.

"On this occasion of course, he has won the most important of all - the Open - and is on his way to getting the full collection after he succeeds in getting the Masters," the DUP leader added.

"It's great to have him - we're really proud of him."

Mr McGuinness said: "We're all so very, very proud of Rory, proud of his achievements, proud of the way he conducts himself throughout the world and very proud of his ambition to further his game and to achieve all of the challenges which are out there, which lie before him over the course of the next 25/30/40 years."

Love the way Rory dressed up for it. Even untied shoe laces to boot (see what I did there?). I say well done. Too many stiffs in Stormont as it is.
