The window was smashed and scorch damaged (© Pacemaker)
A man in his 20s was inside the Movilla Street property when the device was thrown through the front window at around 10.30pm on Friday.
He was not hurt but the house was scorch damaged.
A brick was also thrown at the house and a pane of glass was smashed.
Police have asked anyone with more information to come forward.
Strangford MLA Jonathan Bell called the attack "abhorrent".
He said: "Nothing can justify this dangerous criminal behaviour and while I believe there was no physical injuries petrol bombs risk serious injury and death - they have no place whatsoever in our Newtownards society."
