The gun attack happened at Ballycolman Estate on Thursday shortly after 7pm.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

SDLP Cllr Patsy Kelly described the shooting as a barbaric assault on the victim and an attack on the entire community.

"Once again those intent on violence have brought pain and misery to Strabane.

"The shooting of a man in the Ballycolman area in what appears to be a 'punishment style' attack is nothing short of barbaric.

"Those behind it have set themselves up as judge, jury and executioner with no regard for this man, his family or the wider community," he continued.

"It is utterly deplorable that in this day and age we still have gunmen serving their brand of rough justice on our streets. They have no right to walk all over this community and we cannot allow it to continue."

The councillor said that his thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family.

"I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact the PSNI as soon as possible."
