A man was shot in the legs after being snatched off a street in Downpatrick.

The man was walking along the Saul Road on Tuesday night when a car pulled up and he was bundled into the back.

He was driven across town, shot in both legs and dumped in the Vianstown Road.

Four men in a dark coloured Renault were involved said a police spokeswoman.

Detectives investigating the attack appealed for anyone who witnessed the man being kidnapped or shot to contact them.

The victim was detained in hospital with injuries which were said not to be life threatening.

It was the second shooting in Northern Ireland in less than 24 hours.

On Monday night a man was dragged from his bed in Londonderry and shot several times in the legs by a masked gang, police said.

Several men forced their way into the house at Carrickreagh Gardens in the Creggan area of the city just before 11.30pm on Monday, and carried the man down stairs from the bedroom into the living room where he was shot.

The 24-year-old was hit in both knees and ankles and is being treated in hospital.

Detectives in Londonderry appealed for anyone who witnessed the shooting or who has any information to contact them.
