A 20-year-old man was reportedly shot in the left leg in the Havana Walk area of Ardoyne overnight.
Ambulance crews attended the scene and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.
Police said the incident happened at around 1am on Sunday.
SDLP MLA for the area, Alban Maginness, has condemned those behind the gun attack.
"I first want to extend my sympathy and support to this young man and his family at what is undoubtedly a difficult time," he said.
"This kind of calculated punishment-style attack is unwanted and unwarranted. There can be no excuse for anyone to hand out rough justice in any community."
Sinn Féin North Belfast MLA Gerry Kelly added that the shooting has "achieved nothing apart from adding to the current tension within the local community".
"These attacks achieve nothing and are counterproductive in resolving issues within our community," he commented.
"At a time when the community is standing together against the ongoing marching tensions we see an unrepresentative group creating division.
"The vast majority of people in our community are opposed to these attacks on our young people and I call on those behind them to desist immediately from their activities."
Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the area at the time or who has any further information on the incident has been asked to contact the PSNI.
