A man has been shot in the leg in north Belfast.

The 38-year-old was attacked in the Sheridan Street area shortly before 9pm on Thursday.

He has been taken to hospital for treatment on injuries which aren't thought to be life threatening.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, which took place close to a residential premises, to contact them on the new non-emergency number 101.

Local councillor Nichola Mallon has said that news of the shooting is "deeply worrying".

The SDLP member said: "This is a cruel and unjustifiable attack on a man in the north of our city. I hope that the police act quickly to identify the individuals behind the attack and bring them to justice."
