The gun attack was reported shortly after 11pm in the Saggart area of south-west Dublin.

Garda units responding discovered the victim, who had been shot a number of times in the upper body.

He was later named by police as Andy Connors.

Mr Connors' wife was in the house at the time along with four of the couple's children and a niece - aged from 8 to 15 years.

A statement from An Garda Síochána said: "A male wearing a balaclava mask entered the house through an open door. He was armed with a handgun. A number of shots were discharged."

The victim was removed to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before midnight.

A post mortem will be carried out on the body.

A Garda investigation is underway and the scene at Boherboy, Saggart has been sealed off for a forensic examination.

Investigating officers believe the victim may have attended a function earlier that evening in Monasterevin.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have noticed unusual activity in or around The Old Pound, Boherboy, Saggart, on Tuesday night - particularly between 10pm and 11pm.

They are also appealing to members of the travelling community who may be in a position to assist the investigation to come forward.
