Man seriously injured in city assault

A man has received serious head injuries in an assault in east Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old was attacked in the Newtownards Road area of the city shortly before 1.20am.

A police spokesperson said: "The man remains in hospital at this time where his condition is believed to be stable."

A 22-year-old man has been arrested and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault to contact them on the new non-emergency number 101.
