A 27-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after he was stabbed in an attack in Newry, Co Down.

The assault happened in the Carnagh Park area of the city just before 3am on Thursday.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended the scene.

Another 57-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, was also stabbed in the leg.

His injuries were described by police as not life-threatening.

SDLP councillor for the area, Kevin McAteer told UTV: "I can't comprehend why someone would stab somebody - it's disgusting.

"It's not the kind of image we want to portray to our young people.

"We don't want people thinking, that to resolve a situation, they have to brandish a knife."
