Diver dies in accident on Donegal coast

A Polish man has died following a diving accident in Co Donegal.

The victim, aged in his 40s, had been taking part in a diving trip at Inishtrahull Island around four miles off Malin Head when he surfaced unconscious early on Sunday morning. He was airlifted to Altnagelvin Hospital but was later pronounced dead.A rescue helicopter from Prestwick in Scotland was involved in the operation after being diverted from another incident at Fair Head, near Ballycastle along the North Coast.A man had been discovered on the rocks with a suspected broken ankle. The helicopter, as well as an RNLI lifeboat and a coastguard team from Ballycastle, went to his assistance at around 6.20am.When they arrived a paramedic was winched to the scene - however the crew had to pull out of the rescue in order to attend the diving emergency off the Co Donegal coast. The RNLI said: "Due to another emergency off the Donegal coast the helicopter had to immediately recover their winch-man and make best speed to assist in the other emergency."In a difficult operation the lifeboat crew and coastguards placed the injured man into a stretcher and recovered him from the rocks to the lifeboat."The patient was transferred to an ambulance at Ballycastle Harbour in a stable condition.
