Connor Hughes was arrested after a holdall containing a device and command wire was seized on the Shaws Road.

Hughes, 22, from Altan Close in the Dunmurry area, faces a charge of possessing an improvised explosive device with intent to endanger life.

Appearing before Belfast Magistrates' Court on Monday, the accused declined to reply when the alleged offence was put to him.

He waved at a group of supporters gathered in the public gallery.

No application for bail was made during the brief hearing.

Hughes was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link in four weeks time.
