Appearing at a special sitting of Newry Magistrates' Court, 38-year-old Anthony John Peter McKay spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges against him.

McKay, a plumber from Linen Court, Linenhall Street in the city, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Michael Burns and possessing a weapon namely a bottle on 10 January this year.

The charges arise after Mr Burns was attacked as he lay in bed in a house in the Springfield Road area of the Co Down town at around 1.30am on Friday.

The victim is currently being treated in hospital for injuries which are described as non-life threatening.

On Saturday a detective constable told the court he believed he could connect McKay to the charges and as no bail application was lodged with the court, McKay was remanded into custody and will appear again via video link on Wednesday 15 January.
