Seamus Daly was detained in the Newry area on Monday.

On Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said: "Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have been given additional time by a court to question a 43-year-old man about the 1998 Omagh bombing and other incidents.

"Police have been granted a further 34 hours."

Mr Daly had been found liable for the Omagh bombing in a landmark civil ruling in 2009.

Twenty-nine people, including a woman pregnant with twins, died in the August 1998 attack in the Co Tyrone town.

It was the single bloodiest outrage in the history of the Northern Ireland Troubles and came only months after the signing of the historic Good Friday peace accord.

No one has been successfully convicted of the bombing in a criminal court.

Five years ago Mr Daly, a bricklayer from Cullaville, Co Monaghan, was one of four men found responsible for the bomb at Belfast High Court after being sued by some of the victims' families.

The men were ordered to pay £1.6m to the families.

Daly faced a civil retrial after successfully appealing against the original finding, but the second trial delivered the same outcome as the first, with Judge Mr Justice John Gillen ruling him responsible for the attack.
