He was detained by Serious Crime Branch officers in west Belfast on Friday afternoon.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed on Saturday no charges have been brought forward.
Mr Kearney, 46, was found shot dead in a lake in a north Belfast park.
The father of two had been missing since Tuesday and his body was pulled from the water at about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
A dissident republican group is suspected to have been involved in the murder, which police have described as "callous and cold-blooded".
