Robert Morris, from the Kilkeel area, died following the incident on the Killowen Road at around 5.30pm on Wednesday.

He was 64 years old.

Police said one vehicle was involved in the incident and that Mr Morris was a pedestrian.

The SDLP representative said he was "absolutely devastated" to learn of the death and offered his sympathies to the man's wife and family.

He said: "I know the family very well and my heart goes out to them at this terribly sad time.

"It is devastating news, a real tragedy, and I want to offer my deepest sympathy to his wife and family.

"This is a very sad time and my thoughts and prayers are with them.

"This is a tragedy for the bus driver as well, and for those who witnessed this tragic incident and my thoughts are with them.

"It is a heart-breaking situation."

The Killowen Road has reopened after it was closed overnight.

Inspector Quinn from E District has appealed to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who has any information to contact police in Newry.
