Officers had been appealing for help in tracking the movements of the man, in a bid to find out how he came to be injured.
He was found in the Main Street area of Park village in the early hours of Sunday morning, at about 1.40am, wearing a dark fleece and dark trousers.
The 52-year-old was taken by ambulance to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
Police later appealed for further information about his movements after being taken for treatment, when he may have been spotted in the area or on the pathway leading to Lisnagelvin retail park.
It is understood the man left the hospital of his own accord and may have been seen nearby between 4am and 9am on Sunday.
"While the circumstances of his death are still being investigated, police do not believe a crime was committed," a PSNI spokeswoman said.
