Their victims are the son and daughter of one of the brothers.

A three-week trial at Coleraine Courthouse heard how the children were subjected to years of physical and sexual abuse that started when they were aged just six and seven.

The trial heard distressing and horrific accounts of multiple rapes and serial child abuse.

The daughter of one defendant described how she was regularly raped by her father and her uncle.

She said her father would videotape her being raped and make her watch the recordings.

She told the jury over the course of several years she was raped a thousand times.

To protect the identities of the two victims the two guilty men cannot be named, but they are both aged in their 50s and they have a history of paedophile abuse.

They stood trial on dozens of counts of rape, gross indecency, child cruelty and other serious sexual offences.

A third man - a family friend - was also on trial, although he was acquitted.

The court heard the victims' father began abusing and raping his children in the early 1990s.

His brother, the children's uncle, joined in the abuse.

In 1998, the children told Social Services about some of the abuse they'd suffered.

But the case went nowhere until 2012 when the children - now adults - came forward again with sickening tales of serial child abuse and multiple rapes.

The defendants took the witness stand to deny the charges - claiming the allegations were lies or imagined.

But the jury had already heard the two brothers were convicted child abusers.

They pleaded guilty in another court to abusing their sister in the 1970s and 80s, starting when she was just four and continuing until she was 19.

On Thursday the jury of six women and six men convicted them on a total of 38 charges.

As the guilty verdicts were read out, their victims wept and clung to each other - relieved at last that 16 years after first voicing their allegations, they'd finally been believed.

The two brothers will be sentenced next month after pre-sentence reports and Victim Impact Reports are prepared.
