He was David McGowan, who was aged 28 and from Lisburn.
The Police Ombudsman has launched an investigation into his death.
Mr McGowan had been arrested on Thursday night following what was described as an "incident" on the Beersbridge Road in east Belfast.
It was discovered at around 2am on Friday that he had died while in police custody.
The ombudsman said investigators were sent to Lisburn Police Station and began a detailed examination of the scene.
Dr Michael Maguire's investigators have been there throughout the night and have spoken to the man's immediate family.
They will now speak to witnesses to the incident at which Mr McGowan was arrested and will investigate the actions of police up to the point at which he was discovered in the cell.
A spokesperson said: "At approximately 2.00am this morning the Office was alerted by the police that a man had died whilst in police custody. In line with normal procedure we immediately launched an independent and impartial investigation into the circumstances of the death."
