A 46-year-old man has told UTV that he is lucky to be alive after an arson attack on his home in Armagh.

Louis O'Neill was asleep when the incident happened shortly after 2.10am on Saturday in the Mullacreevie Park area of the town.

He heard dogs barking and his neighbours shouting and went to investigate.

"When I came down I looked out and saw that the back door of the house was ablaze," he said.

Mr O'Neill began putting the blaze out with buckets of water, until the Fire Service arrived to investigate.

Extensive smoke damage has been caused to the back of the house.

Mr O'Neill said that his pregnant wife was staying with family, but has been left frightened to return home. Their new baby is due in five weeks' time.

He said that he has lived on the estate all his life and doesn't know why he's been targeted - describing the attack as "callous and cowardly."

"Obviously if someone does something to someone, there's obviously a reason for it. As I said, I have no issues or no reason to believe why somebody would want to come and do this to me."

Armagh City Councillor Gareth Keating said that the incident may have been a case of mistaken identity.

"Whilst details are still unclear it is suspected that this serious incident in Mullacreevie Park was arson. This is totally unacceptable.

"This criminal behaviour is not welcome here in Mullacreevie Park or indeed any area of our City," the Sinn Féin representative said.

Police are treating the incident as arson and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward
