The victim, aged 36, was lifted in the Gortgonis Road area of Coalisland on Friday evening.

It happened at about 6.30pm and he was driven around for 20 minutes, during which time he was assaulted and was threatened with a crossbow while the pair demanded money.

A short time later the man, who had been sitting in the front of the van, was able to get away when the vehicle stopped in the Derrytresk Road area. He ran off and the pair did not follow.

Police said he suffered minor injuries and was left in a state of shock.

A spokesperson added: "Detectives in Dungannon are investigating a kidnapping and robbery in Coalisland. The victim's phone was taken by the assailants who also demanded money.

"Dungannon CID are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who noticed a white van in the Gortgonis Road area at around 5.30pm. They can be contacted by calling 0845 600 8000."
