It is believed the incident on the bridge at the Hightown Road happened at around 7.30am.
Police urged motorists caught up in the delays to continue to exercise patience, as officers worked to get traffic moving again.
The road and Hightown Bridge have since been fully reopened.
Heavy delays affected a number of routes throughout the morning and into the afternoon, with motorists advised to avoid the M2 and Sandyknowles roundabout until the backlog had cleared.
