He has been named locally as Enda McLaughlin from Glentogher, Carndonagh.
It has been reported the 27-year-old hailed a taxi in the Dutch city of Heerlen and asked to be taken across the border into Germany in the early hours of Monday morning.
Newspaper reports in Germany have claimed the man stabbed the taxi driver before fleeing the scene.
He then demanded cash from another man before stabbing him.
The man went on to hail a second taxi to take him to the city of Cologne.
That driver managed to get away after hearing an alert over his radio, however, the man went on to attack a truck driver in a layby.
It is believed he then ran onto a busy motorway before he was struck and killed by a car.
All three of the victims are said to be in critical condition.
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that a 27-year-old man from Donegal died.
It is understood he had spent time in a Cork prison and had a number of previous convictions.
