The man, aged in his 80s, was killed in the incident in the Loughnamarve Road, Lime Hill area of Pomeroy on Tuesday.

It's believed the man was working in a field harvesting summer crops when the accident happened.

Cookstown Councillor Cáthal Mallaghan is from the area and knows the family.

He said: "The family play an important role in the farming community and the man had farmed his whole life.

"For people who farm into their 80s it is a vocation, a family heritage and an important tradition for them.

"This family are good wholesome people."

The Sinn Féin representative added: "This has rocked the entire farming community in Pomeroy.

"This is a busy time of year for farmers trying to prepare for the winter and they are working long hours.

"It's very sad, something you don't want to hear, but farming is a dangerous business and accidents can happen."

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the incident.
