John Lamont was attacked in the Carnvale area, just off the Carniny Road, in the Co Antrim town at around 3am on Tuesday.

Mr Lamont is understood to have recently retired and is well known in the local community, having lived there for over 20 years.

His wife Liz Lamont, 59, also suffered stab wounds and is in a critical condition in Antrim Area hospital.

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident.

He is currently in custody assisting police with their inquiries.

A neighbour, who had spoken with Mr Lamont on the evening he was attacked, described the family as "quiet and hard working".

"Kind neighbours, they were very kind, they would have been there for you if you needed them and needed any help," she said.

Another neighbour said the violent death was "shocking" to the those living in the area.

Robin Swann, UUP MLA for North Antrim, extended his sympathies to the Lamont family.

"These are both very serious incidents which will shock the local communities in which they have taken place," he said.

Tragic news, thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family circle. A gentle and kind family, so undeserving of this pain but I know you'll all support one another. Ricky M.
