A 62-year-old man has died and four others are in a serious condition in hospital after a a two vehicle crash in Co Tyrone.

The collision, which involved a black Suzuki Vitara and a blue Toyata Avensis, happened on the A5 Melmount Road, between Sion Mills and Victoria Bridge on Wednesday at around 10.50am.

The man who died was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

Two men and two women, who are aged in their 20s, 40s and 50s, are all in a serious condition in hospital.

Police in Strabane say the Melmount Road has reopened to traffic. They are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.

Joe Byrne, SDLP MLA for West Tyrone, described the latest road death as "tragic news."

"My heart goes out to the families of those involved and I offer my deepest sympathy," he said.

Strabane Councillor Patsy Kelly added: "It is heart-breaking to hear another life has been lost on this stretch of road and my deepest sympathy goes out to the family of the victim and anyone who has been injured."
