The victim was assaulted in the Westland Road area on Saturday and received hospital treatment for his injuries. The attack, however, was not reported to the police.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out later.

The arrested man, aged 22, was detained in Portadown on Thursday morning.

He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Upper Bann MP David Simpson has called for anyone with information to go to the PSNI.

"While every area has its problems, local residents in this part of Portadown work hard and take pride in their home and community," Mr Simpson said.

"The vast majority of residents have worked together to help build a close knit, integrated and harmonious community. They get on with their lives and seek to raise their family and do the best for their children.

"This will come as a major shock to them. It is completely out of character for the community. It is vital that police officers are assisted in every possible way as they set about trying to establish the exact circumstances."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed an assault or who has any information to contact them.
