A murder investigation has been launched after a 30-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Drogheda, Co Louth in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Wayne McQuillan, of Marian Park in the town, was attacked in the Rathmullen Park area at around 1.45am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The murder investigation was launched after police considered the results of the post-mortem.

A 40-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the investigation.

She is currently detained at Drogheda Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Drogheda Garda Station on 041 9874200, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station," a spokesman said.
